Newton, N.J., resident selected for Centenary University ad campaign after his Enactus team places third in global business competition.
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J., July 26, 2019—Heriberto Medina already understands the business of success. The Newton, N.J., resident, who graduated from Centenary University in May, was a key member of the University’s Enactus team that placed third last fall at the Ford Mobility Innovation Challenge in Palo Alto, Calif. Competing against teams from the United States, Brazil, Morocco, and Ghana, the Cyclones took home a $5,000 grant from Ford Motor Company’s philanthropic arm, Ford Fund, in the contest.
Medina was one of eight Centenary students profiled in the launch of the University’s new campaign, titled The Future U, which highlights Centenary’s career-focused educational approach. The campaign features the futures students and graduates envision as a result of earning a Centenary University degree.
For Medina, that vision includes becoming a financial analyst, and someday, running his own business. The finance major is well on his way to that goal, thanks to the University’s challenging business curriculum and practical experience gained through Enactus, an international organization that encourages entrepreneurial, student-led projects to empower people and communities. At the competition in California, Medina and the team presented their original concept for Shieldz Wearable Technologies—a wristband that warns drivers of fatigue through sound and vibration—to a panel of Ford executives.
A scholarship enabled the determined scholar, who sometimes juggled a 20-credit course load, to transfer to Centenary and start on the path toward his Future U. “I attended another college before Centenary, but the financial restriction became too much for my family,” Medina explained. “That scholarship gave me the opportunity to attend college.”
