Program is designed to position students for graduate study and jobs in the growing exercise and wellness industries.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ, Oct. 6, 2020—Centenary University is set to launch a new Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, a degree that will position graduates for careers in the fast-growing exercise and wellness industries. Slated to begin next fall, the program will provide students with in-depth knowledge of physiology, exercise, and human performance, within a framework emphasizing wellness education and healthy lifestyles.

The degree is designed to prepare Centenary students for careers in clinical, corporate, or community-based exercise and wellness programs. In addition, the University’s program ensures that graduates complete the minimum prerequisites for most advanced degree programs in physical therapy and athletic training, as well as providing the skills needed for required certification exams for careers in health and wellness, fitness, and training.

Demand for healthcare occupations is expected to grow 15 percent through 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Craig Fuller, Ph.D., director of the University’s medical lab science program and a faculty member in health sciences, noted the exercise science degree is part of a broader initiative to expand Centenary’s educational offerings in the health sciences to meet increasing demand for well-trained professionals in northwestern New Jersey and beyond. The University also recently introduced a new Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science and a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. “This is an exciting time at Centenary,” Dr. Fuller said. “We are expanding into health and diagnostic testing—two areas that are critical to the well-being of our society. This is a great opportunity for our students to build careers in these growing fields.”

Dr. Fuller explained that the study of exercise science encompasses several overlapping disciplines such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, growth and development, exercise nutrition, measurement, and evaluation. Centenary’s new exercise science degree blends classroom instruction with experiential learning, including a community-based internship in the field required for graduation.

The exercise science program is currently accepting inquiries and applications. For more information, click here.
