Hackettstown, N.J., Jan. 16, 2024—Centenary University will host a series of English as a Second Language (ESL) workshops during the spring semester, with the first scheduled for Jan. 25. The free sessions are open to members of the local community and are designed to meet the specialized needs of adults and families. The courses are designed to help immigrants and other non-native English speakers develop proficiency in English.
Since its inception in 2015, Centenary’s community ESL program has assisted hundreds of participants from many countries who have a limited ability in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding English. This spring’s schedule is:
- ESL Course for Adults: This three-session course, which is for adults only, will be held Jan. 25, Feb. 22, and March 14. Community members can choose to attend workshops on those dates from noon to 1 pm at Centenary University, or from 2:45 to 4 pm at Hackettstown Medical Center.
- ESL Course for Families: This three-session course for families will be held April 11, May 9, and June 13 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Children are welcome to attend.
“These workshops are one of many ways that Centenary serves our local community,” said Christina Lenway, academic enrichment coordinator for multicultural students in the Centenary University Academic Success and Advising Center. “As a first-generation college graduate, I understand the unique challenges people may face in learning a new language and leveraging their culture, family support, and personal strengths for success.”
