keith_m_1Hackettstown, N.J., September 8, 2016 – Dr. Keith Morgen, Associate Professor of Psychology at Centenary University, recently published a book titled Substance Use Disorders and Addiction by Sage Publishing.

Substance Use Disorders and Addictions is part of the Counseling and Professional Identity Series. This publication examines co-occurring psychiatric disorders as the norm with substance use disorders and addictions. With more than 20 years of experience in the field as a clinician, a researcher, a program developer, and an instructor, Keith Morgen encourages a holistic approach to working with individuals, using a single case example throughout the text to encourage the sequential application of concepts to co-occurring disorders. With DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, the 2014, the 2014 ACA code of ethics, and 2016 CACREP standards integrated throughout, readers will benefit from this applied and cutting-edge introduction to the field.

Key features of this title include a single case example that runs throughout the book to compare different treatment approaches and provide a realistic introduction to the complexities of co-occurring substance use, process addition and psychiatric disorders and additional case examples to highlight issues of diversity and social justice. Chapter-ending sections apply to adolescents and older adults. A review of the state of the profession provides context for the field’s myriad of licenses and certifications and educational levels of clinicians.

“Dr. Keith Morgen presents an outstanding updated text on substance use disorders where students will be able to better conceptualize treating the substance use disordered client while adhering to common clinical work flows integrating the DSM-5, the ACA’s 2014 code of ethics and the latest CACREP standards,” says Kevin A. Freeman, Assistant Professor of Counseling and Substance Abuse Training Coordinator, Mercer University.

Dr. Morgen’s research on substance use, trauma, and prisoner mental health has been published in major scholarly journals such as Traumatology, Therapeutic Communities, The Gerontologist, The Professional Counselor, Journal of Correctional Healthcare, Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling, Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly, Applied Research in Quality of Life, Journal of Drug Issues, and the Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education. Dr. Morgen is also co-author of the upcoming Forensic Psychology text Aging Behind Prison Walls (due out in 2019). In addition, Dr. Morgen presents papers at major conferences such as the American Counseling Association, American Public Health Association, American Psychological Association, and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence.

“Dr. Morgen is a very accomplished professional in this field and is a valued member of the Centenary University faculty,” says Dr. Harriett Gaddy, Associate Professor of Psychology, Graduate Counseling Program Director and Chair of the Psychology and Counseling Department at Centenary University. “Members of the Psychology and Counseling Department are pleased to hear about his new publication.
